Фрэнка Бома, знаменитые по всей Америке (и, кстати, уже не раз экранизированные в эпоху немого кино). Еще одна немалая заслуга Артура Фрида в том, что он один против всех отстаивал кандидатуру Джуди Гарленд на главную роль. Подготовка к съемкам очень быстро показала, что Волшебнику Страны Оз, как это случится чуть позже с Унесенными ветром, Gone with the Wind, суждено стать гигантским и очень сложным проектом ( 65 декораций, 4000 костюмов для 1000 актеров, 136 съемочных дней, итоговый бюджет в 2 700 000 долларов). Многие создатели фильма и исполнители главных ролей задерживались на площадке ненадолго. Сценарий был подписан 3 соавторами, но над разными его версиями работали еще с десяток редакторов (в том числе – Герман Манкивиц, Сэмюэл Хоффенстин, Огден Нэш, Джон Ли Мэйин и пр.). Если рассматривать сценарий в общих чертах, он немало отличается от первоисточника, что следует приписать осторожности и благонамеренности представителей студии «MGM». Путешествие в Страну Оз представлено в фильме сном, хотя у Л. Фрэнка Бома оно реально; в сценарии не осталось ничего от жестокости и чудовищности придуманных им персонажей и ситуаций. 1-я переделка внесла, по крайней мере, одно полезное изменение: использование сепии в прологе и эпилоге на ферме, что еще выгоднее подчеркивает применение цветной пленки «Technicolor» в других эпизодах и придает хоть какую-то двусмысленность некоторым персонажам, исполняющим в фильме двойные роли.Живейшее желание сесть в режиссерское кресло выражал Мервин Лерой. Однако Луи Б. Мейер посчитал, что Лерою хватит и продюсерских забот. Поначалу на роль режиссера предполагался Норман Таурог, главный голливудский специалист по работе с детьми, но затем на площадку пришел Ричард Торп – на 2 недели. Ни один отснятый им план не вошел в фильм. Он передал эстафету Джорджу Кьюкору, а тот, в свою очередь, через несколько дней был заменен Виктором Флемингом. Флеминг отснял большую часть материала, пока его снова не бросили на замену… Кьюкору на площадке Унесенных ветром. Наконец, в последний месяц съемок, довести проект до конца было поручено Кишу Видору. Главное достижение Кьюкора было в том, что он снял с Джуди Гарленд светлый парик, который она проносила 2 недели, работая с Торпом. Многие исполнители главных ролей сменяли друг друга, и, в отличие от общего правила для большинства голливудских крупнобюджетных постановок, итоговый выбор не всегда оказывался наиболее убедительным. Разумеется, Фрэнк Морган – замечательный актер в реалистичных и эмоциональных ролях (см. его великолепную работу в Смертоносной буре, The Mortal Storm, и Магазинчике за углом, The Shop Around the Corner), но здесь он довольно бесцветен. Маргарет Хэмилтон аккуратно (хоть и с блеском) придерживается традиционного образа злой ведьмы из детских сказок: остроконечная шляпа и крючковатый нос, зеленые одежды, скрипучий смех и т. д. В качестве анекдота напомним, что полчища карликов, собранные с таким великим трудом (всего их было 350), оставили по себе очень недобрую память на студии «MGM», поскольку их грубое и непристойное поведение на площадке постоянно оскорбляло ту атмосферу, которую студия пыталась создать на этом фильме.Такое множество финансовых, технических и человеческих усилий в итоге привело к триумфальному успеху фильма сразу же после премьеры; успеху, который ничуть не уменьшился при повторном прокате в 40-е и 50-е гг., а позднее – при многочисленных показах по телевидению. Во Франции Волшебник Страны Оз пользуется определенной репутацией лишь среди киноманов, и та сложилась только лет 20 назад, после выпуска фильма в сети элитных кинотеатров. Но для американцев она – часть их популярной культуры и даже самой жизни. Через телевидение персонажи этого фильма, подобно героям Касабланки, Casablanca и Унесенных ветром, по нескольку раз в год приходят в гости в каждую семью, где их принимают с большой радостью – особенно потому, что дети сходят по ним с ума. В эстетическом отношении и фильм, и вся история его создания, несомненно, противоречат самому понятию авторского кинематографа и индивидуального творчества. Если судить его по критериям мюзикла, мелодии и хореография (если вообще можно говорить о хореографии) не превосходят уровень хорошего ревю в мюзик-холле. В художественном отношении между Волшебником Страны Оз и, к примеру, Бригадуном, Brigadoon лежит такая же пропасть, как между рекламной афишей и полотном крупного мастера. С другой стороны, фильм может похвастать выдающимся по тем временам уровнем спецэффектов. Работа над ними была очень рискованной, поскольку использовалась относительно новая технология 3-цветного «Technicolor» (1-й полнометражной картиной, целиком снятой на эту пленку, стала Беки Шарп, Becky Sharp, 1935 Мамулян). Благопристойность, характерная для этого фильма, не нарушена (и не оспорена) ни одним оригинальным образом, ни одним хоть сколько-нибудь смелым сюжетным поворотом. В конечном счете, фильм достоин жить в памяти благодаря забавной человечности Трусливого Льва и, прежде всего, необыкновенной Колдунье Запада, которая по праву заняла свое место в фольклоре и коллективном бессознательном детей всего мира.N.В.
